fanboy (fanman?) about the cast of Iron Man 3 a little?

So it begins filming in just over a week, and aside from the obvious inclusions of Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle (and Paul Bettany doing the voice of JARVIS) it also has Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall.

And if that’s not enough, Thor 2 starts filming by the end of the Summer. Officially excited. Roll on 2013!

Edit: To clarify, Iron Man 3 is apparently based on the Marvel Comics’ Extremis arc. Guy Pearce has been confirmed as being Aldrich Killian, and before then Ben Kingsley was rumoured to be playing Mallen. (Both of whom feature in Extremis.) By that logic, I think it’d be safe to assume that Rebecca Hall is being cast as Maya Hansen, Aldrich Killian’s colleague.

I begin thinking that getting a team of writers and artists to work on several interconnected comic books is a viable business plan.

(I don’t even know any comic book writers or artists.)

I cannot begin to say how much I love Rebecca Hall. Just a brilliant actress. And apparently she’s in discussion to be in Iron Man 3.
And I love those boots.

Lauren Socha, star of E4’s Misfits, has pleaded guilty to racially aggravated assault of a taxi driver.

The BAFTA-winning actress, who plays Kelly in the teen drama, was sentenced to four months in jail for attacking Sakander Iqbal in Derby city centre in the early hours of the morning on October 1 last year.

Socha was accused of punching and racially abusing the cab driver following a nine-hour drinking session. Iqbal, 52, is quoted as saying that the incident represents the worst abuse he has received since moving to the UK in 1970.

~

A Channel 4 spokesperson has confirmed that Lauren Socha will not be reprising her role as Kelly in series 4 of Misfits.

“A mutual decision was reached between Clerkenwell and Lauren earlier this year that she would not be returning for the fourth series,” it was announced in a statement.

Misfits has been in production for a number of weeks now and Lauren is not part of the lineup.”

It was also confirmed that Socha’s departure is not related to her recent conviction for racially-aggravated assault.

The spokesperson added: “No. Clerkenwell Films and Lauren Socha agreed some time ago that along with other cast members, including Iwan Rheon and Antonia Thomas, she would not be returning for the fourth series of Misfits, which is currently in production. Channel 4 supports both parties’ decisions.”

This is an incredibly sad situation. Misfits is one of my favourite TV dramas of all time and I really rated Lauren Socha as an actress. The character of Kelly was brilliantly observed by Howard Overman and I think this story has tarnished the incredible reputation that Misfits has garnered.

That said, I think it is a good thing that Lauren Socha is not returning for series 4 following this.

Obviously, this news was meant to be kept under wraps until later on, when series 4 had been filmed. I also daresay that they were probably planning a small swansong for Kelly akin to Nathan’sLas Vegas Babyshort following Robert Sheehan’s departure. (Though I think it would be in poor taste to do that now.) Channel 4 have been forced to announce this early because, of course, when someone does something like this they lose their job.

Lauren Socha was very much in the public eye; people loved her. And because she has done something ugly and stupid and terrible, she has thrown that away. Other people may be more forgiving but I have very little sympathy for racists and bigots. One thing I can’t stand is people lamenting her leaving the show, like they did with Robert Sheehan. Despite the fact that the decision was made before the conviction, (though I doubt that there wasn’t a part of Socha who considered this case when she chose to leave) did you really expect her to stay on the show following this?

The only thing I will give credit to Lauren Socha for is that she was wise enough to step away from the project and give the writers time to stay on schedule, rather than forcing them to make radical changes now, during filming.

In summary, this situation has left me feeling quite bitter, but I have no time for racists. I will be watching series 4 of Misfits and I’m looking forward to seeing who they’ve cast in the role of their new female lead, Jess.

  • Question: Are you going to "The Beatles: The Lost Concert" movie premier in a few weeks? - Anonymous
  • Answer:

What an odd question. I must admit that I didn’t even know such a film was about to be released. That said, I’m not a die-hard fan of The Beatles (Literally my favourite is Ringo Starr because he narrated Thomas the Tank Engine.) and I don’t tend to go to the cinema to watch those sort of concert-documentary films.

That said, in terms of Beatle-based films. I enjoyed Nowhere Boy and Lennon Naked.

  • Question: hey! thank you for replying to my post about british slang. But your first comment got cut off by tumblr before you could finish -- could you please repeat what you said? I'd appreciate it! - mswyrr
  • Answer:

No problem. I can’t tell what you’ve already read (Tumblr won’t let me see my reply) so I’ll just paraphrase what I remember writing.

I was saying that Tom would probably say that he and Hal talk about “the ladies” or “courting”. “Talking about girls” is a bit American. I cannot think of a slang term for “lad chat” but something similar like “lad talk” or whatever is probably okay.

I also just wanted to point out that a “lad” is a very specific sort of person. (A usually young, boorish, loud beer-drinking man, often very sexist. Similar to what I imagine a jock or frat boy is like in America.) The reason I wanted to say is that there is a sort of specific vocab that comes with lads.

1. What are four of your favourite foods?

This is a very touch question, as I really love food. I would probably narrow my favourites down to chilli con cacao, shroomy spaghetti bolognese, (both my own recipes) my mum’s lasagne and my grandparents’ curry.

2. Who in the world do you most want to spend a day with?

Do you really need to ask that question? Of course it’s you. This has been a dream of mine for years and years.

3. What is your best attribute?

Physically: I like my eyes and eyebrows. And I have good, super-long legs.

Personality-wise: I’m very calm. All the time. People often talk of my ability to calm a room when I walk into it, which I feel is a lovely compliment and a great skill.

4. Sweaters or Jackets?

I assume you mean jumper when you say sweater. Definitely jackets. I don’t own enough jackets but I think I look smarter in a nice jacket or coat. Jumpers are for lazy days in or manual labour.

5. What are you most proud of in your life?

I don’t really consider myself very prideful. I suppose I’m aware that I’m a good writer, but that is offset by how little I’ve actually accomplished with my writing. Other than that, I think I’m proud of the relationship I’ve forged with my partner.

6. Top 3 musicians?

Another tough one. I love Florence and the Machine; like I can’t think of a track that I don’t like. I suppose I would say Lostprophets is my second choice. They’re very emotive and there’s a degree of patriotism in that choice. Third is a local girl who plays acoustic guitar at a few venues I’ve been to; Rachel Rimmer.

7. First name that comes to mind.

My own name.

8. Book that has had the biggest impact on your life?

This is a toss-up, right here. The first I’d say isCharlie and the Chocolate Factoryby Roald Dahl. I read this when I was having an operation years and years ago. I think my real love of books and reading came from that; when I was transported from the hospital ward to this dream factory full of chocolate.

The next of would have to be The Northern Lights by Philip Pullman and the rest of the His Dark Materials trilogy. As a child, this series of books began to test certain notions that I had in my head and, I think, cemented certain ideals that I hold today. The relationship between the angels, Balthamos and Baruch, springs to mind. As does the depiction of God as a senile old man so fragile that he is turned to dust in the breeze.

My final choice isFrankensteinby Mary Shelley. On a purely practical level, it’s been the single most referenced book in my entire academic life, having been part of my studies at GCSE, A-Level and at University. I know this book inside and out. I also think it wasFrankensteinthat bridged the gap between contemporary children’s books and classical literature.

9. You meet Dame Judi Dench. What would you say to her?

Um, what a specific question. I suppose I would say that I think she’s brilliant, but she’s probably heard that a million times before. I don’t know; Dame Judi Dench is one of those talents that is so familiar and reliable, I never really think about wanting to meet her or talk about how good she is. I’m much more likely to say that about up-and-coming actors; new and exciting people.

10. Greatest gift you’ve ever given or received (physical or not)?

Goodness, how does one quantify the gifts that they’ve been given in a lifetime. Right now, I’m going to say my Kindle specifically because of this: at Christmas time, my partner proposed that because she was working and I wasn’t, that we set an upper limit on how much we should spend on presents to each other. I suppose it goes without saying that she then went on to ignore her own advice and bought me a Kindle, which was both a complete surprise and the perfect gift. I think, beyond the physical gift itself, she also gifted me with her generosity.

11. Number One goal for the next 12 months?
